Increase your Facebook application response time by using batch api calls
iMakeInternet — Tue, 02/09/2010 - 18:05
It isn't a huge secret that Facebook often has time-out issues when it comes to many applications. The reasoning behind this is because many applications use many API calls during execution, and this in turn adds delays to your server's response time to Facebook. It is very important to know that Facebook has hard limits on how long your server can take to fully execute your code and return it to Facebook -- somewhere around 10 seconds. Once this limit has been reached, Facebook will give the ever-so-familiar message of:
The server at x.x.x.x is taking too long to respond.
or you will simply get a white screen with nothing explaining why you are looking into a field of whiteness.
Many common API calls to Facebook are executed fairly quickly, although the execution time varies depending on many different things from traffic congestion to maintenance issues. On average you can expect an API call or FQL query to take about 1-5 seconds depending on how complex your API call.
Ready to make all these delays go away? Keep reading.
